Difference between drilling, boring & reaming

In the field of mechanical engineering, there are lot many things which are impossible to understand without knowing what is drilling, boring and reaming. So, today we will be discussing them and clear our doubts regarding three of these and discuss their possibility over our workpiece /job. Drilling, boring and reaming had been extremely used over CNC turning/milling and other operational machines to get a perfect hole. All these operations are performed just to obtain the perfect hole in our job piece.

Drilling:

Cutting of hole into solid surface is termed as drilling. It is done by a cutting tool known as drill bit. Drilling bit structure is designed in such a way that its rotation leads to elimination of surface particle coming in contact with bit. Due to very high speed of motor which rotates our drill beat elimination process of material happens at a very rapid rate. The size of hole and efficiency of operation completely depends upon size and type of drill bit used. Various companies offer their drill bits as per customer needs and job material.

Boring:

 As drilling is used for creating holes in our work piece, boring is something which could be regarded as next step of drilling which includes enlargement of the drilled hole. In boring we basically enlarge the diameter of circular area drilled on our job/work piece.

Now, its a very common question why so.? Why can't we use drill bit and ignore completely boring.? or Why don't we use drill bit of greater radius firstly.?

There are lots of concepts and answers to these questions, some of them are:

- Greater bits usually mark harsh imprints on small sized job/work piece.
- Finalizing job become much more easier and safe.
- While working practically over drills and CNC's it is regarded that large radius bits should be operated at low rpm's (Rotations per minute) and vice versa. So, using larger bits at low speed requires high power which indirectly burdens machine.
- Enlarging the holes wears our tool at very less rate whereas direct drilling wears tool at very high rate.
-Boring produces very less noise if proper tool is used.

Reaming:


Reaming could be termed as final step in the process of getting final perfect hole. In reaming we basically give a finishing touch to the hole after some irregularities marks imprinted after drilling and boring operation. Sometimes our work piece/job material causes sticky/improper chip formation which are removed with very ease with the help of reamer tool bit. A reamer is a tool used for reaming operation and a wide variety of reamers as per our job requirements are available in market.
